Nobody ever seems to know what’s appropriate to wear as the seasons change – we consider it a success if we can wear our favourite summer staple throughout September without raising any eyebrows.
Thankfully, one of our favourite Scottish designers, Alana McClean, guides us through how we can easily transition our wardrobes.
RWH: If you could recommend one fall piece worth making an investment in this season, what would it be?
AK: This season, I really love the tux pant – it has made an appearance on so many runways and is such a chic addition to any woman’s wardrobe. It is super figure flattering and can be dressed up or down. If you want to play it safe go for the classic look and wear a solid black pant accented with a black satin stripe. If you want to go a bit bolder test out a white stripe, and for those of us that are risk takers, consider a cobalt colour or Bordeaux pair.
RWH: Do you have any general rules of thumb for transitioning summer pieces into your fall wardrobe?
AK: I have always been a big fan of layering and it really is the simplest way to transition your wardrobe from one season to the next – pretty much making your wardrobe season less. My general rule for layering is to always make sure to use the lighter layer as the base and the bulkier items as toppers.
—Pair a silky summer mini-dress with some tights and toss on an army jacket to create an adorable fall ensemble.
—Place a tissue turtleneck or long sleeve shirt under your favourite summer blouse.
—Top your staple summer maxi-dress with a cosy knit sweater and add a belt for definition.
